Neuromuscular and cardiovascular adaptations during concurrent strength and endurance training in untrained men.

2012

This study examined the effects of concurrent strength and endurance training on neuromuscular and endurance characteristics compared to strength or endurance training alone. Previously untrained men were divided into strength (S: n=16), endurance (E: n=11) or concurrent strength and endurance (SE: n=11) training groups. S and E trained 2 times and SE 2 + 2 times a week for strength and endurance during the 21-week period. Maximal unilateral isometric and bilateral concentric forces of leg muscles increased similarly in S and SE by 20-28% (p<0.01) and improvements in isometric forces were accompanied by increases (p<0.05) of maximal muscle activation. Rate of force development of isometric …

Carbon Monoxide Protects Against Ischemia-reperfusion Injury in Vitro via Antioxidant Properties

2012

Carbon monoxide (CO) is believed to mediate many of the cytoprotective effects attributed to the activation of heme oxygenase (HO-1), the enzyme responsible for CO production. Recently, the study of CO-releasing molecules (CO-RMs) has provided a new approach for the delivery of CO. In the present study, we examined whether the cardioprotective properties of CO-RM2 in isolated rat hearts subjected to an ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) sequence were associated with the presence of CO. In addition, the antioxidant properties of CO-RM2 were evaluated. In hearts pretreated with CO-RM2, the improvement in contractile function at the end of the reperfusion period after 20 min of global total ischemia w…

Interpolated measures with bounded density in metric spaces satisfying the curvature-dimension conditions of Sturm

2011

We construct geodesics in the Wasserstein space of probability measure along which all the measures have an upper bound on their density that is determined by the densities of the endpoints of the geodesic. Using these geodesics we show that a local Poincar\'e inequality and the measure contraction property follow from the Ricci curvature bounds defined by Sturm. We also show for a large class of convex functionals that a local Poincar\'e inequality is implied by the weak displacement convexity of the functional.

Four unrelated patients with lubs X-linked mental retardation syndrome and different Xq28 duplications

2010

The Lubs X-linked mental retardation syndrome (MRXSL) is caused by small interstitial duplications at distal Xq28 including the MECP2 gene. Here we report on four novel male patients with MRXSL and different Xq28 duplications delineated by microarray-based chromosome analysis. All mothers were healthy carriers of the duplications. Consistent with an earlier report [Bauters et al. (2008); Genome Res 18: 847-858], the distal breakpoints of all four Xq28 duplications were located in regions containing low-copy repeats (LCRs; J, K, and L groups), which may facilitate chromosome breakage and reunion events. The proximal breakpoint regions did not contain known LCRs. Interestingly, we identified …

Differential electrophysiologic and inotropic effects of phenylephrine in atrial and ventricular heart muscle preparations from rats.

1991

Stimulation of alpha 1-adrenoceptors evokes a different pattern of inotropic responses in atrial and ventricular heart muscle preparations from rats. The inotropic effects are accompanied by different changes in membrane potential. In an attempt to clarify the question whether or to which extent these events are causally related, the effects of phenylephrine on force of contraction, transmembrane potential, Ca2+ current (ICa) and K+ currents were comparatively studied in either tissue. In atrial preparations, phenylephrine 10 mumol/l caused an increase in force of contraction, a marked prolongation of the action potential duration and a depolarization of the membrane at rest. In the ventric…

The Psychological Contract for Healthcare Workers

2020

Abstract Healthcare workers are more vulnerable to burnout due to the fact that they often face stressful situations that involve high levels of risk and emotional involvement, especially if they are exacerbated by patients they provide care to. The activity in the medical field is not only physically demanding, but also socio-emotional, being necessary a better understanding of the socio-emotional aspects present in the employment relationship. The health sector is facing continuous changes and reforms, periods of uncertainty when the fulfilment of the psychological contract is less probable. We propose the description of a relational model between the psychological contract with work enga…

EMG, muscle fibre and force production characteristics during a 1 year training period in elite weight-lifters.

1987

The effects of a 1 year training period on 13 elite weight-lifters were investigated by periodical tests of electromyographic, muscle fibre and force production characteristics. A statistically non-significant increase of 3.5% in maximal isometric strength of the leg extensors, from 4841 +/- 1104 to 5010 +/- 1012 N, occurred over the year. Individual changes in the high force portions of the force-velocity curve correlated (p less than 0.05-0.01) with changes in weight-lifting performance. Training months 5-8 were characterized by the lowest average training intensity (77.1 +/- 2.0%), and this resulted in a significant (p less than 0.05) decrease in maximal neural activation (IEMG) of the m…

Glycyrrhetinic Acid Reverses the Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Hypocontractility to Noradrenaline in Rat Aorta: Implications to Septic Shock

2014

Abstract.: Septic shock and associated vascular hyporeactivity to vasoconstrictor agonists remain a major problem of critical care medicine. Here we report that glycyrrhetinic acid (GA), the active component of licorice, effectively restores vascular contractility in the model of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treated rat aorta. GA was as effective as the NO synthase inhibitor NG-nitroarginine methylester. GA did not affect the vascular NO levels (measured by EPR spin trapping) and relaxations to l-arginine in LPS-treated rings as well as relaxation to S-nitroso-Nacetylpenicillamine in control rings. Thus, GA may represent an interesting alternative to NO synthase inhibitors in sepsis-associated …

Antihistaminic and anticholinergic activities of mequitazine in comparison with clemizole

1988

Abstract The antihistamine and anticholinergic properties of mequitazine have been investigated and compared with those of clemizole. Both mequitazine and clemizole antagonized the effect of histamine in guinea-pig ileum competitively, the pA2 values calculated by Schild plot were 9.95 ± 0.44 for mequitazine and 10.54 ± 0.44 for clemizole. Mequitazine at 10−7 M produced a parallel shift of the dose-response curve to acetylcholine in the rat duodenum, clemizole and the lower doses of mequitazine failed to modify the effect of acetylcholine. The potency of mequitazine and clemizole as H1-histamine blockers is similar, but only mequitazine at highest concentration used showed anticholinergic a…
